Household Archaeology

Our research at Brześć Kujawski with its longhouses, pits, and burials led us to conceptualize the Neolithic household as the primary unit of decision making and resource allocation.    Bogucki and Grygiel 1981 (see Selected Publications) is an early statement of our thoughts on households, and we have returned to this topic often over the intervening decades.    We have expanded our focus to include the delineation of hamlets, or local collections of autonomous households.    For some recent thoughts on the topic, see Bogucki and Grygiel 2022 under Selected Publications.
